Yesterday my wife and I celebrated our 47th anniversary. Our four children are now in their thirties and forties, two of them each with three of their own and one of them expecting in January. Each of them have challenged, stretched and blessed us they help us to continue growing in new directions.
Someone has said,
“When our children our young they walk behind us
as we show them the way,
As they mature they walk beside us
as together we discover the way,
And when they are adults they walk before us
to lead us in new ways.”
Steve Mathonnet-VanderWell, a fellow pastor in the Reformed Church of America, gives elegant expression to this idea in his blog post The Adult Child Shall Lead Them. With him I want to say “Thank You” to my adult children for all the ways they have challenged and blessed me. I think his words will ring true for you.
“Yes, life is fast and furious for them. But even more, what I notice is the way adult children influence and change their parents.”
